Canadian Toy Industry Hall of Fame Inductees

Driven by his entrepreneurial spirit John Rice ventured into uncharted territory to become a leader in the decoration industry. He began in the business in 1946, directly after finishing his service with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Mr. Rice spent 17 years with Noma Electric Corporation reaching the position of Executive Vice-President, before leaving the company in 1963 to found Carillon Lighting and Alderbrook Industries. Carillon became the first company in the country to manufacture scotch pine artificial trees and Alderbrook in turn commenced the manufacture of spun satin tree ornaments that delighted consumers.

Mr. Rice, who is widely respected for his sixth sense in business, was also one of the first to introduce miniature Christmas lights which were an instant market hit and have become the most popular method of lighting for interior trees. Eventually, Carillon merged with Alderbrook to form one of Canada’s largest full line suppliers of seasonal lights, decorations and Christmas lighting displays. Mr. Rice, who is now Chairman of Alderbrook Group Inc., was a CTA Board Member for many years.
