FRANK WHITE

Frank White’s start in the Toy Industry began without fanfare and almost by accident. A Montreal native, Frank had been employed by Dupont of Canada at its Montreal head office, when a series of events in 1970 prompted him to seek employment outside the Province of Quebec. Taking the bull by the horns, he ran an ad in the Globe & Mail that drew a surprising number of responses, including one from Whitman Golden in Cambridge. Frank started with Whitman Golden as Controller in early 1971, later becoming Secretary Treasurer and then Executive Vice President. By 1975, he had been appointed President and his Toy Industry career was in full flight.

Whitman Golden (now known as Golden Books Canada), long known for its Little Golden Books, soon expanded its presence in the Game and Jigsaw puzzle areas of the toy business. The launch of Poleconomy in the boardroom of the Royal Bank, with the cameras rolling, saw a group of prominent politicians bankrupt the country in 45 minutes. (surprise! surprise!) The popular board games, Pictionary and Outburst followed shortly thereafter. Service was always the watchword and the result that commitment to service was certainly reflected in the growth of the Company.

Frank was always a strong supporter of the Canadian Toy industry. He served on the board for a total of 17 years. He was the Chairman for 3 years from 1979 to 1982, and also served a year as President of the International Committee of Toy Industries in 1981.

When Frank retired in July of 1998, he commented that it was the people he would miss most of all. He enjoyed the opportunity to work closely with such people as Dennis Tiberiis, Mac Irwin, Tom Vernon, Sam Ganz, Peter Stevens and many others, too numerous to mention, to say nothing of a host of buyers, licensors, and employees. He considered these people, not only his business associates, but more importantly, his friends.
