Behind the Scenes of Toy Fair® University Speaker Selection

toy-fair-university-jackie-retzerJune 2, 2025 | With applications now open for Toy Fair® University speaker presentations, Toy News Tuesday editors caught up with Jackie Retzer, director of event management at The Toy Association™, to pull back the curtain on what it takes to land a spot on the Toy Fair University stage. Retzer offers valuable insights into the inner workings of the competitive selection process, what makes a standout submission, and the voices the team is eager to bring to the forefront at Toy Fair 2026, taking place next February 14 to 17 at the Javits Center in New York City:

What makes Toy Fair University such an impactful platform in the toy industry?
The global toy and play community gathers to do business at Toy Fair — the largest toy show in the Western Hemisphere — and the Toy Fair University stage is where show attendees come together to spark ideas, share expertise, and inspire the next big thing. Our sessions bring together diverse voices, from established industry leaders to bold newcomers, all offering forward-thinking insights that help Toy Fair attendees gain a competitive edge.

Presenting at Toy Fair University is a unique opportunity to position yourself as a thought leader in front of a highly engaged, global audience. Our speakers often tell us that the connections they make and the ideas they exchange at Toy Fair last long after the show floor closes.

What types of topics will be a key focus for the 2026 Toy Fair University program?
We’re looking to spotlight the topics shaping the industry’s future, not just what’s trending today. Expect a strong focus on areas like AI and emerging technologies, retail strategies for a shifting marketplace, consumer insights, marketing in a digital-first world, licensing and brand partnerships, and innovation in inventor education. We’re especially eager to explore how play is connected to broader cultural movements — think sustainability, diversity and inclusion, and the evolving definition of play across generations.

What’s the secret to crafting a standout submission?
It starts with perspective, not promotion. We’re not looking for sales pitches or product demos; we’re seeking personal insights and real-world experiences that spark meaningful conversations. Ask yourself: What knowledge do I bring to the table? What questions am I helping the audience answer? How can I inspire others to think differently about the challenges and opportunities facing our industry? The best submissions show us what you know and how it can make a difference.

Can you share some insights into the speaker selection process?
The Toy Fair University selection process is both collaborative and competitive. We receive a high volume of applications, so it’s important to clearly convey your expertise, what you’ll cover, and why it matters. Our team looks for a balance of cutting-edge topics, diverse perspectives, and actionable takeaways. We also aim to feature voices from across the global play community, from thought leaders to those with fresh, underrepresented viewpoints. We want to hear from people who are willing to push boundaries and think beyond the status quo.

What’s your best piece of advice for applicants?
Think big and bold, but stay focused. We love to see topics that challenge conventional thinking, offer practical solutions, or give audiences a “lightbulb moment.” And remember: It’s not about you, it’s about what you can share with others. Show us how your expertise can help your peers navigate the evolving world of play.
